![]() ![]() Eccentric, aristocratic Montagu Norman of the Bank of England dealt with the problem of inadequate gold reserves to support the overvalued pound sterling by convincing Benjamin Strong, head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, to lower interest rates in America to encourage the flow of gold back to Europe. The main characters of this unfolding drama were a quartet of bankers who saw themselves as “elite tribunes, standing above the fray of politics, national resentments, and amateur nostrums,” and who wielded astonishing, autonomous authority over monetary policy. The United States, a new economic power holding the bulk of the world’s gold bullion, demanded repayment of loans made to its allies this forced large, untenable reparation payments on Germany. France, Britain and Germany found themselves depleted of gold reserves. The gold standard, to which the major currencies of the world were tied, was thrown into tumult by World War I. Investment manager Ahamed sets the stage for his story with Toynbeean sweep. Erudite, entertaining macroeconomic history of the lead-up to the Great Depression as seen through the careers of the West’s principal bankers. ![]()

But as the war drew to a close, Americans began appealing to revolutionary ideas about the equality of all in their fight against another enemy: slavery. Initially, that meant freedom from British rule. The American Revolution was a struggle for liberty. ![]() ![]() ![]() 761-773 Carrier category volume Carrier category codeĬarrier MARC source rdacarrier Content category text Content type codeĬontent type MARC source rdacontent Contents pt. and notesīibliography note Bibliography: pt. ![]()
![]() ![]() ![]() When we get to the last third, the poems get really special. The beginning two thirds of the poems are solid poems, and one of my favorites, Garlic Mustard, falls in that chunk, but each poem builds on the last. The collection is also really well put together. They're done in a traditional field guide style, and combined with the style of some of the poetry, it really gives off the field guide vibes inspired by the title and cover. There are also illustrations, one for each poem, and they match really well. The poems do a good job of showing the general sense of dread, as ice becomes rare to see, turtles grow fur, and the planet is irrevocably changed in a short time. ![]() ![]() Said invasive species have been mutated via pollution and climate change, adding eye stalks to carp amongst other things.
